take a look at the position above, White's pieces are active and ready for attack while the black pieces are rather passive. this gives white way better chances for attack and due to Black's poor piece positioning, the position is already +1.5, this shows the importance of piece activity.

believe it or not black is already lost in this position (+6.5). this is due to the bad pawn structure which blocks Black's pieces. on the other hand, white has a solid pawn change which accelerates the attack on the King side as well as complimenting both bishops. this is perfect for attack, always try to form solid pawn structures that doesn't block your bishops.

     This is an example of a pin, the bishop pins the knight to the queen, white can add more pressure with the move Nd5 which wins the game on the spot . It's important to look out for pins and ways to pile pressure on the pinned piece. 

       The position above shows the most basic fork. In this case the knight attacks both the queen and the rook which wins the game for white.

2. Discovered Attacks: Discovered attacks can be particularly devastating, as they allow you to attack an opponent's piece while simultaneously uncovering a more powerful attacking piece.

       

     In this position black can unleash a devastating tactic by capturing the h2 pawn with check, this opens up the queens line of sight and on the next move, capture the undefended queen.
